FAS celebrates six staff in the prestigious 2021 President’s Outstanding Staff Awards

As part of the President’s Staff Awards, on May 12, the UT Tower was lit in honor of award recipients. Every year the university president honors staff who contribute to the institution’s success by granting 30 Outstanding Staff Awards and four Outstanding Supervisor Awards. This year six FAS staff received the prestigious Outstanding Staff Award.

As part of the annual President’s Staff Awards, the university recognizes and honors the dedication of employees who have served the university for 10 or more years with its Service Awards. This year the list consists of more than 800 staff across the university, with 185 of those being FAS staff. Within the FAS portfolio, years of service range from 10 to 45. Pictured left is an infographic that breaks down the count of FAS Staff Service Award winners.

Texas Swim Center worked behind the scenes to support Texas Athletics champions

On March 27, Texas Athletics Men’s Swimming and Diving team won the 2021 NCAA championship under retiring Swimming and Diving Head Coach Eddie Reese, marking another conference title spanning his 40-year career in that role. The Women’s Swimming and Diving team shone as well, winning third place in the championship meet. A regimen of practice led up to those wins, several months of which took place at the Texas Swim Center (TSC).

PTS transforms San Antonio Garage into art exhibit space for UT Austin’s TEDx event

In an effort unique to Parking and Transportation Services (PTS), the parking division of the department supported this year’s TEDxUTAustin event held March 5 through 6, 2021. TEDxUTAustin is an independently organized and student-led annual event that draws upon the university’s students, faculty and staff to host inspiring talks and exhibit displays in the spirit of TED Talks. As in past years, the purpose of the 2021 event was to share ideas, inspire creativity and create community, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event had to be mostly remote. With support from PTS, TEDxUTAustin was able to reach more than 1,000 visitors to the organization’s Hear+Now drive-thru art exhibit.

Business and Financial Services brings ease of procurement to FAS

Procurement needs across the FAS portfolio vary greatly from unit-to-unit. Each purchase has its own set of requirements that can present challenges to individuals who are unfamiliar with the process. Business and Financial Services (BFS) makes navigating the process of procurement much easier on its FAS clients by bringing the FAS core values of service, stewardship, teamwork and integrity to the procurement process.

Many FAS employees braved the elements to come to campus to address critical operations, while others rose above power and water outages at home to keep important processes moving forward.

I hope you enjoyed the winter break with your family, friends and loved ones. I spent time virtually with my five brothers and sisters; it’s rare we are all able to come together given our schedules and we live in different parts of the country. COVID-19 made our visit different from usual, but I’m grateful we were able to safely celebrate the new year together.

Service, as a core value of FAS, represents the spirit of partnership and, by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s definition, “grace”— a spirit that binds our various divisions across the portfolio. Monday’s holiday is an official day of service and celebration of the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. As we reflect on Dr. King, let us also acknowledge the humble service of Martin the man, as well as our own capacity to serve.
