New federal leave options available for those affected by COVID-19
On April 10, Human Resources provided an overview of two new federal leave options that will allow additional paid time off for those affected by COVID-19.
The two options were passed by the US Congress as part of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and include Emergency Paid Sick Leave and Expanded Family and Medical Leave.
The Emergency Paid Sick Leave provision provides up to two weeks of paid sick leave to eligible employees. The Expanded Family and Medical Leave provision provides up to 12 weeks of leave to eligible employees who are caring for their child whose school or place of care is closed or whose childcare provider is unavailable due to COVID-19 related issues.
Human Resources, Payroll, and other business administration professionals across campus are working through how the university will roll out these new leave options. Once the options are available to employees, time off under both will be retroactively available as of April 1, 2020.
