ITS reaches students through DUO how-to video
When the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, our students were faced with many challenges, including having to participate in student orientation online this summer and an influx of cyberattacks and phishing scams related to the pandemic.
Information Technology Services (ITS) quickly began to implement a plan to roll out DUO for multi-factor authentication to most UT online services to increase security. This solution posed an additional challenge of effectively reaching students in a remote environment about a relatively complex topic.
Susan Roy is a director in Customer Support Services (CSS) for ITS.
“Video is something we have thought about as a way to help explain complex subjects, particularly to students,” said Roy. “With students being remote and student orientation needing to move online this summer, our Duo project presented a great opportunity to pilot video.”
Information Technology Coordinator Chris Longoria, along with a team of other CSS professionals and senior student employees, quickly developed a short, minute-long video to help explain the Duo tool and how to get set up before students need it.
“Our team is always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to improve our services,” said Longoria. “This video was a fun way to experiment with a new way of communicating that has been very successful. We hope to be able to expand our use of video in the future.”
At the time of publication, the video has been viewed more than 9,000 times, demonstrating that a little bit of video can go a long way in communicating about complex topics.
