Daily Texan panel explores campus safety
On September 17, the Daily Texan hosted a panel discussion on campus safety that featured Chris Bonnet, executive officer for the UT Police Department; Jimmy Johnson, assistant vice president for Campus Safety; Joell McNew, founder and president of SafeHorns; and Orlando Smart, a sergeant with the Austin Police Department. The Texan’s editor-in-chief Spencer Buckner moderated.
Questions posed to the panelists related to “planning, prevention and support resources around UT, including safety training, transportation around campus, planning and prevention projects, lighting on campus and homelessness in the West Campus area,” according to an article in the Daily Texan preceding the event.
The free event was open to the public, and it offered an opportunity for questions from the audience. View the Daily Texan’s video of the panel discussion on their Facebook page.
“This panel discussion gave all of us—panel members and attendees alike—a great opportunity to consider how far UT Austin has come in terms of safety. It also offered a forum for listening to concerns, which will help us and our partners explore ways we can work together to continue improving the safety of our campus community,” said Johnson.
“UTPD is appreciative to the Daily Texan for setting up this opportunity for an open community dialogue about safety and security matters on campus,” noted Bonnet. “We hope this event served to strengthen established partnerships and forge new ones. At UTPD our vision is to be respected and trusted by all segments of the UT Austin community--a goal only attainable through communication and engagement such as provided by this panel discussion.”
